This site is dedicated mainly to the study of the later coinage of Byzantium, particularly the issues of the Crusader and Palaeologan eras. It is primarily aimed at general collectors, with a view to expanding their understanding of the subject by providing them with important information to which they may not have had access, and with ideas which have not been previously broached in the literature, either popular or academic*. The site includes extended articles on general topics, short notes on specific topics and reports on individual coin types. Basic data and information used to support the articles and notes is included in a separate data section. The foundation article is a comprehensive study of the Thessalonican trachea of Andronicus III Palaeologus, designed to correctly date and assign these various types. Also included are my own ideas on the sequencing of the Thessalonican trachea of Andronicus II and Andronicus III Paleologus. Other articles include a summary of current thinking on the Bulgarian and Latin "Imitative" types, and a critique of Hendy's theories on the coins of John Comnenus Ducas, and of Bendall's attributions of various rare types to Andronicus I Gidon. This last article has now (Oct. 2013) been significantly revised. The Notes section includes a critique of Bendall's 2000 hoard of mainly Andronicus II types, a note on the supposed "starred" version of S.2486, a detailed listing of the "Post-Hendy" Latin types, and some reassignments of various controversial types. In Jan. 2012 a note on the place of the rare and interesting "Papal-byzantine" types in the history of the silver issues of the late Roman/early Byzantine empire was added. The Data section includes details of various unreported finds of Palaeologan coins, plus a listing of all overstrikes and mules involving Andronicus II and Andronicus III types known to me, including quite a number of new examples from the recent finds. Some unlisted Paleologan types are also detailed and illustrated. An interesting silvered trachy of Theodore Mangaphas is included (April '08). I have also included a technical note on the estimation of die numbers - this could be useful to those interested the various later hyperpyra, to take just one example. Other notes and studies of various aspects of the coinage will be added from time to time.
